Technology Transfer
Space plays a key role in our daily lives with applications in Earth observation and telecommunication, as well as timing and positioning services. In addition to satellite-derived data, space has also changed our life through technology transfers. The systems engineered for the harsh conditions of outer space demand exceptional reliability and robustness, enduring temperature extremes, radiation and launch vibrations, among other challenges.
These characteristics not only ensure functionality in space but also pave the way for pioneering applications across diverse industries on Earth:
From space tech to health applications
HDES (High Density Energy Storage) is aware of the potential of space to innovate the medical sector and is developing cool gas generators for space and terrestrial applications.
From the cosmos to your pocket
Digital photography from long-range telescopes led to the miniaturised cameras on today’s smartphones (CMOS image sensors).
From rocket science to saving energy
Metalot Future Energy Lab leverages iron powder as a circular energy storage solution, with potential to support a more sustainable and efficient energy transition.
From space stations to Earth
Circular life support systems supplying astronauts with oxygen, water and food are increasingly being integrated in terrestrial systems.
From spacecraft to emergency kits
Space blankets used on the exterior surfaces of spacecraft for thermal control are now included in emergency kits.
From rover-inspired robotics for navigation
Improved automated guided vehicles in factories on the basis of the ExoMars rover navigation systems.
The ESA Technology Broker process
The brokerage service is freely available to any non-space entity seeking to address innovation challenges, as well as to any space entity exploring terrestrial applications.
Though there are no strict criteria for participation, typically a technology provider possesses tested and reliable technology or software ready to be transferred towards a product developer.
Both space and non-space entities are invited to get in touch. From the space industry, we collect technology descriptions; from non-space parties, we collect technology requests.
Ultimately, the objective is to maximise the impact of space in the wider economy by matching potential space solutions with innovation challenges from terrestrial industries.
Bringing technologies initially tested and developed for space to vast terrestrial markets can be challenging (regulatory hurdles such as for medical applications, intellectual property, funding, time, cross sectoral and multidisciplinary collaboration, etc.).
To support the space industry with the process of technology transfer, our brokerage service includes:
- Solving industrial challenges using space technology (spin-off)
- Supporting companies to bring terrestrial innovations into the space domain (spin-in)
- Technology scouting and matching
- Brokering introductions to potential collaborators
The ESA Technology Broker Network
The European Space Agency – ESA established a network of Technology Brokers. The brokers operate within regional and national innovation ecosystems, but also act as a network to ensure a pan-European reach accelerating technology integration and product development.
In the Netherlands, the brokerage is jointly operated by Space Business Innovation Centre Noordwijk and NL Space Campus. The broker acts as the intermediary partner to stimulate collaboration between the space and non-space industries.
Matching the needs of non-space industries
Over the years, the broker network developed a market led approach targeting specific non-space industries, assessing the challenges of companies, and subsequently matching these with technologies, know-how, and other competencies. Linking space solutions to industrial challenges is of particular interest in the following four Dutch top sectors with a high socio-economic impact:
